Any stage employee who is of legal working age and has resided within the jurisdiction of Local 205 for the preceding eighteen (18) months can apply for membership.
Attending the Unionism class is your first step to becoming a union member.
Afterwards, your next step is to schedule an in-person interview with our Executive Board by contacting an Executive Board member.
At the time of your interview, you will need to bring:
- A non-refundable $100 application fee, via cashier’s check or money order made payable to IATSE; and
- a $200 initiation fee, via personal check, cashier’s check, or money order made payable to IATSE Local 205. (The Local's initiation fee is refundable if the application is denied by the International and/or Local Membership.)
- A resume, CV or other verification of applicable industry work/experience/education.
At the interview, you will be provided with an application form to complete, which will be submitted to the International for approval. Once accepted, Local 205’s membership will discuss your application at the next two membership meetings. You will be invited to the second membership meeting to introduce yourself. During this meeting, the membership present will vote on your application. If the vote is positive, you will be sworn into Local 205 as a Junior Member and both your constitutional and financial obligations begin.
*The applicant must be sworn in within 6 months of submitting application to the International, or the application may be declared null and void, with forfeiture of all monies paid.*
Junior Membership
There are two levels of membership in Local 205, Junior member and Journeymen member. Newly sworn-in members are Junior members. Junior members attend membership meetings to become familiar with how the union works. Junior members all the rights of Journeyman members except the right to vote.
In order to become a Journeyman member, Junior members must attend six (6) Regular Membership Meetings within three (3) years.
*If the member fails to complete the requirements of Junior Membership by the three-year deadline, the member’s promotion to Journeyman status becomes subject to discussion and ballot by the Membership at the next meeting. If the body rejects the application for Journeyman status, the member is expelled from membership.*
Journeyman Membership
Once a member has completed the requirements of Junior membership, they are eligible to apply for Journeymen membership. Applications for Journeymen status should be made in writing to the Local 205 Vice-President, notifying the Executive Board of the completion of the requirements and requesting promotion. The Executive Board examines the Junior Member’s eligibility and determines when they will come before the body to be promoted and sworn in as a Journeymen.
