According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers represented by unions earn higher wages than their non-union counterparts in virtually every category of employment.
According to a report by the Center for American Progress Action Fund (Madland, 2018), the strength of the middle class is directly related to the strength of the labor movement. When unions are stronger, the middle class does better; when unions are weaker, the well-being of the middle class declines. A report from the Economic Policy Institute (Bivens et al., 2017) reached a similar conlusion: that stronger unions have a positive effect for working and poor people across the economy, both union and nonunion.
The general population is clearly aware of the positive effects of unions. According to the Gallup polling organization, public approval of unions has been growing steadily in the United States for over a decade, with 64% approval in August 2019.
